Life can be much harder for teens and youth than we realise. Their inner lives can be way more turbulent and distressed than they are showing. Many are hit hard by death and tragedy in their circle of friends. Bring them to good therapists. Let them experience good therapeutic interventions. Young people can be very responsive to the work we do, and quick to transform. If you have the tiniest inkling that you, your child, your friend... are more worried, upset, depressed, distressed, withdrawn than usual, or are just not themselves, please ring me, or someone in my line of work, and talk about it. They will benefit hugely from a warm hearted, supportive, knowledgeable, professional therapist.
Learning Coaching
When teenagers are in their last years of school they become more self aware. They become very interested in what they are like and why they are like that. They are ready to see their unique talents, personality and learning style and to work with themselves positively and intentionally. Youth are often left to make their own way when they leave school and move on to further education, work or travel. They are often not mentored and supported, although they are still vulnerable as they move into independence.
I work with them as a teacher, psychotherapist and coach to understand and harness their powerful emotions and unique learning styles and to mentor them in education and life.
Sometimes one session is enough e.g. to become freed up from debilitating anxiety before an exam, the trials or the HSC.
Sometimes a few sessions are what's needed to break through old habits and embrace new ways of learning.
Sometimes weekly coaching sessions throughout the term/semester are best to consolidate the changes.
And sometimes pure therapy; working through anxiety, depression, social phobias, ADHD, Aspergers etc is what is needed. It is easier for teens to say they are going to their tutor, rather than to their therapist.
So, it's tailored to your child or young adult. Learning coaching, therapy, or a mix. It's usually a mix.
